Preventing Bacteria from Creating Resistance to Drugs In 1943, the antibiotic era began when penicillin, a member of the [beta]-lacam family of drugs, was developed. Since then, tens of thousands of derivatives of penicillin have been developed, but only seventeen antibiotics of this family are currently marketed in the United States. Penicillin and its derivatives work by preventing certain bacteria from building strong cell walls that keep their shape and integrity. Without well-integrated cell walls, "bacterial trying to grow in the presence of penicillin puff up and die."1 Almost all bacterial diseases have evolved some level of resistance. The "increased use of antimicrobial drugs encourages the spread of resistance and increases the prevalence of drug-resistant strains."2 In fact, most virulent strains, like many sexually transmitted diseases, require at least double the dosage that was used a decade ago. Vancomycin, commonly referred to as the "last resort drug," is being used by hospitals in ever-increasing amounts. Bacterial resistance is the result of evolutionary responses. One cause of resistance is through mutation. In some instances, proteins used to build the cell are altered to bind penicillin poorly or not at all. A second type of resistance occurs when the bacteria preemptively breaks down penicillin into harmless by-products before they have the chance to bind with the cell wall. A greater cause for concern is the fact that "bacteria may reproduce with different bacterial species passing on resistance" to bacteria that did not previously possess the ability to resist any drugs.3 Humans are the predominant cause for drug resistance. The Accounting Department 1. Inkwell has a small finance team. The accounting department is based in the head office of the company, which is located in Birmingham. There are 8 people in the finance team. Each member of the team has their own computer. The team has access to the internet using Firefox and two printers integrated to each computer. 2. Inkwell has one Financial Director, Anil Gupta. Anil’s main job is to manage the overall financial position of the business, ensuring capital investments and corporate strategy is properly dealt with. He has delegated the running of the accounts department to the company accountant. 3. Inkwell has one company accountant, Michael O’Payne who has been in charge of most financial affairs before Anil Gupta joined the company. The others in the financial team report to him. 4. The team consists of one accounts technician, one General Ledger and Inventory Clerk, one Accounts Payable Clerk, one Accounts Receivable Clerk, one Costing Technician and one Payroll and Personnel Database clerk. 5. The accounting department keep a close relationship with the shop staff. The main mode of communication is through email and phone calls, occasionally a member from the team will pay them an unexpected visit. The Accounting Department- Key Internal Stakeholders 1. Alex Fox, accounting technician, has the responsibility of making sure the accounting system is reviewed and recommend changes, along with other project work. She has to report to both Anil and Michael, however works more closely to Michael. 4. Michelle Labelle, General Ledger and Inventory Clerk, has the duties of maintaining the company’s cash book and keeping control on the company’s inventory. This requires Michelle to keep in close communication with the store managers. She too reports to Michael. 5. Liana Khan, Accounts payable Clerk, has the responsibility of entering all the suppliers’ invoices and credit notes on to the accounting system. She also has to ensure payments are arranged to suppliers. Liana also reports to Michael, her Father in Law. 6. Greg Morris, Accounts Receivable Clerk, has the duties of inputting all data received by customers, as well as credit control duties. These duties include sending out monthly statements to customer, working out discounts and chasing customers who have not paid in the time given. 7. Alan Cook, Costing Technician, has the responsibility of operating the costing system. This means Alan has to work closely with the Sales director in order to reach market prices. Alan uses Quickcost software to do his work and has been doing it for since the company started. He also monitors the cost and profitability of each cartridge on a monthly bases and advises management about variance targets. 8. Sharon Ward, Payroll and Personnel Clerk is responsible for the running of the payroll, both Weekly and monthly and also to make sure the personnel database is always up to date. It occurs when two spouses feel that a legal separation is the only way to put an end to their problems such as, differences in goals, financial difficulties, or poor sexual relationships. Most countries including United States and Canada permit divorce only in certain circumstances. Countries like Ireland and Philippines prohibit divorce because divorce rips apart families, the base of society, the base at which society is built around. ProceduresA couple that is wishing to proceed with a divorce first fills out the proper papers and returns them to court. Making the arrangements for alimony, child custody and support, and division of their property. They then appear in court in front of a Judge who listens to their arguments by which they want to end their marriage, and then decides weather or not to grant them a divorce. In the past, the judge order the man to pay considerable alimony, give up some of their proper ty, and take on most of the responsibility of supporting their children. There were two main reasons for this, first, majority of divorced women did not have a job and needed money to help support the children. Secondly, because the man was the guilty spouse and the guilty spouse could not receive alimony. Today Judges realize that woman have qualifications for well paying jobs and do not need to be supported fully by their ex-husbands. They can also file for no-fault divorces. No-fault divorce is when neither side is labeled guilty. Some people oppose no-fault divorces because they believe such divorces can be obtained too easily. They feel couples can end their marriage without there being a real good reason, and that the couples should consult a marriage counselor. The divorce process is easier under the no-fault laws then the fault laws. Therefor can sometimes be obtained by couples without lawyers. Some judges oppose this type of divorce because often the protection of the chil dren and spouses are overlooked. Child Custody and SupportIn the early and mid 1900s, Judges almost automatically granted custody to the mother. They believed that children should not separate from their mother. Today, many Judges realize that the children might not be better off with their mother for various reasons such as drug addictions or criminal records. These reasons might also be true when they do not grant custody to the father. The Judge, in some situations, might ask the children which parent they want to live with, then consider visit rights for the other one. If the court changes their decision for any reason, the children might have to move, but this is prevented if possible because such a move can be very emotionally harmful on the children. The child might feel torn between their parents, and will not choose a side in fear of harming the other ones feelings. Children often find it hard to deal with a divorce mainly because they are too young to understand that this is probably the best thing for the family and each parent.
